Transforming Cape Breton Island into a safer and more livable community by promoting cycling for everyday transportation and recreation in one of our main goals.

Like similar initiatives elsewhere, the Velo Cape Breton Bicycle Friendly Program is based on the use of a certification mark identifying and publicizing accommodations that cater to bicycle tourists.

All properties listed in the five Cape Breton regions below are meeting the Velo Cape Breton Basic requirements of the Bicycle Friendly (BF) Network. i.e. bike rack/storage, cooking shelters at campgrounds, washing/drying facilities, bicycle related information/resources, healthy meals. Advantages of the Cape Breton Bicycle Friendly Network:

1. Increase your exposure to the growing bicycle community;

2. Give your business "bike appeal" drawing cyclists to your door.

3. Increase word-or-mouth recommendations from locals and the bicycling community.

4. FREE subscription to the Velo Cape Breton eNewsletter to keep informed about local and regional bicycling activities and opportunities.

Joining is simple:

  • Select the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for your type of establishment, Hotel/Motel/B&B Accommodations, Campgrounds, or Services (restaurants, craft shops, museums, etc).
  • Make a copy of the MOU. Make arrangements to meet the Conditions of Accreditation as listed on page 1 & 2. Most, if not all of the basic items listed are probably readily available at your establishment; other items, such as the bike rack and tools can be had at a minimal cost. Velo Cape Breton will provide you with the List of References, and Bike Routes in your immediate area.
  • Mail the completed documents to Velo Cape Breton for processing.
